Both the deposits left by hard water and soap scum are alkaline, due to the lime content, and cannot be removed with normal types of detergent. They can, however, be removed with a mild acid solution. The frequency will depend on the effectiveness of the daily and weekly cleaning procedures plus the degree of water hardness of the tap water. It is recommended that this be performed initially MONTHLY and, depending on the requirements of the particular institution, could be either increased or decreased in frequency. Recommended Method: As in all cleaning procedures, the first step is to gather the recommended janitorial equipment together, check the cart supplies and proceed to the area to be cleaned. Set up caution signs. Wear gloves and any other protective equipment recommended and/or required. Check with your supervisor. Discard used articles and soap. Place doorway mats. Dust mop floor (use putty knife on gum, etc.). Pour acid lime remover into a plastic bucket. Apply acid lime remover by immersing the mop into the solution and wring out partially before applying to floor. Mop lengthwise along the baseboards. Then use figure-8 strokes to mop the balance of the area. Since this solution is acidic, it should be applied uniformly and not allowed to remain on the floor more than four or five minutes. Rinse the floor thoroughly with fresh water. Use water generously, as any acid solution remaining on floor could eat away at the grout or metal surfaces. Allow to dry. Repeat the previous 3 steps, if necessary.
